Nokia has announced its acquisition of the US optical networking company Infinera for $2.3 billion, a strategic move to capitalize on the growing artificial intelligence (AI) market.

This acquisition is aimed at leveraging the increasing demand for data centers driven by advancements in AI technology. By acquiring Infinera, Nokia is a significant player in the optical networking sector.

The acquisition makes Nokia the second-largest player in the global optical networking market, holding a 20% market share and trailing only behind Huawei.  This strategic move allows Nokia to diversify beyond its traditional 5G market, which has experienced slower growth recently.

Integrating Infinera’s expertise in intra-data center communications will enhance Nokia’s offerings to major tech companies like Amazon, Google (Alphabet), and Microsoft, which heavily invest in new data centers to support AI operations.

Financially, the acquisition will be funded through 70% cash and 30% stock. Nokia projects cost approximately $300 million CAD savings following the deal’s closure next year.

Despite the typically dilutive nature of such deals, Nokia’s shares rose by 4% after the announcement, indicating investor confidence in the strategic benefits of the acquisition.

Expanding into the AI-driven data center market aligns with anticipated recovery and significant investment in this sector.

The synergy between Nokia’s strong presence in Europe and Asia and Infinera’s robust footprint in the US is expected to create a competitive global entity capable of efficiently managing combined sales and operational costs.

The strategic timing of this acquisition positions Nokia to capture a significant share of the AI-related data center market, which is poised for substantial growth.

Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark said, “AI is driving significant investments in data centers at the moment, and one of the key attractions of this acquisition is that it significantly increases our exposure to data centers.”

Pekka emphasized the optimal timing of the deal, aligning it with the expected market recovery and increasing AI investments.

He noted that AI is driving significant investments in data centers, and the acquisition will significantly increase Nokia’s exposure to this high-growth segment.

“This is pretty optimal timing for a deal of this nature when you are timing it just before the market is expected to start to recover,” Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark said in an interview.

In summary, Nokia’s acquisition of Infinera highlights the growing importance of AI in driving technological advancements and market shifts.

By expanding its AI-driven data center market footprint, Nokia is positioning itself for future growth and competitiveness in an increasingly digital world.
