The AI industry is thriving, and so are big retail giants. Amazon has recently rolled out a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) tool. This generative AI tool is specifically designed to efficiently answer shopper questions about products, marking a significant leap in e-commerce innovation.

The feature, which debuted in Amazon’s mobile app, represents the company’s ongoing experiments with generative AI. It’s a strategic effort aimed at simplifying and enhancing the shopping experience for its vast customer base.

Maria Boschetti, an Amazon spokesperson, said in an email, “We’re constantly inventing to help make customers’ lives better and easier, and are currently testing a new feature powered by generative AI to improve shopping on Amazon by helping customers get answers to commonly asked product questions.”

The AI tool prompts users to inquire about specific items within the app. It then swiftly generates answers, typically within a few seconds. This process primarily involves summarizing crucial information sourced from product reviews and the listing details. The tool’s design focuses on staying on-topic, returning error messages for unrelated queries, such as inquiries about Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos.

Interestingly, this AI tool differentiates itself from others, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, by not supporting extended conversations. However, it boasts the capability to respond to creative prompts, such as writing a haiku about a product or describing an item in the style of Yoda from Star Wars.

The driving force behind this innovation is Amazon’s commitment to making customer lives easier. By providing quick and accurate answers to common product questions, the tool aims to prevent the need for customers to scroll through extensive reviews or read lengthy product descriptions. This feature is particularly beneficial in enhancing the efficiency and satisfaction of the online shopping experience.

Upon hearing this news, some users took their social media handles to express their excitement over the fact that this new AI innovation will make their life easier.

Yet, there are concerns among some users that this new Amazon AI too might lead to a reduction in customer support roles within the company.”

Amazon’s journey into integrating AI into its services isn’t new. In recent months, the company has implemented several AI-driven features. These include AI-generated summaries of product reviews and AI tools assisting third-party sellers in writing listings and creating ad photos. Moreover, Amazon has introduced ‘Q,’ an AI chatbot for corporate assistance, and ‘Bedrock,’ a generative AI service for Amazon Web Services customers.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, in the latest earnings call, highlighted the broader implications of generative AI. He emphasized its potential to revolutionize customer experiences and its accessibility for developers and business users. Jassy’s vision underscores the societal benefits and transformative power of AI in various sectors.
